Opening Prayer: The Lord’s Prayer

Distribution of Textbook, Notebook, and Catholic Youth Bible

Lesson 1: Exploring the Bible


  • The word “Bible” comes from Greek Býblos, a Phoenician port where papyrus was prepared and exported.
  • The Bible or Scriptures are names given to the collection of sacred books of the Jews & Christians.
  • Our Christian Bibles are divided into two major sections: Old Testament & New Testament.
  • The word Testament means a promise, agreement, or covenant.


Lesson 2: Finding Biblical References

  • Format is “Book Name” “Chapters #” “ : or , ” “verses #”
  • Book Name may be written out or abbreviated.
  • Verse # are inclusive (from beginning to ending)
  • Turn to page 1377 in Catholic Youth Bible

    • Name at top is the Book Title = JOHN
    • The large purple “1” is the beginning of the first chapter
    • Chapter 1 continues until Chapter 2 (second column on page 1380)
    • The superscripts before words are the beginning of that verse #
    • Tops of pages are indexes (like a dictionary)

  • Turn to page 1383, find & read verse 16.

    • To reference this verse list Book Name, Chapter, : , verses
    • John 3:16

  • Turn to page 1321.

    • Find verse that begins “And Joseph too went up from Galilee …”and continue to end of paragraph.
    • The correct reference would be Luke 2:4-7

  • Finding the reading from the reference [Matthew 6-13] = The Lord’s Prayer
