Jan 10 2010 Searching the Church
SIXTH GRADE RELIGIOUS EDUCATION January 10, 2009 Name:__________________________________
Visiting St. Edward the Confessor Catholic Church
Today, we are visiting our parish church. There are many features that would be found in any Catholic church and some that are found in just some churches. We will be exploring in small groups and will be identifying all the inside components. Read the text on the attached three pages, fill in the blanks, and write the corresponding numbers below to fill in the missing appropriate word(s).
______ Altar = table to celebrate the Eucharist
______ Ambo = place where Scripture is proclaimed
______ Ambry = the container on a wall for consecrated oils
______ Antependium = a banner-like cloth hung before the altar or ambo
______ Baptismal Font = a holy water holder for the sacrament of Baptism
______ Candles = found throughout the church represent Christ as the light of the world
______ Commons = lobby area
______ Credence table = a side table for articles used at Mass
______ Crucifix = a cross with the crucified Christ (usually above the altar)
______ Cupola = highest point of the church
______ Dossal = large ornamental wall behind an altar
______ Icon = religious image (statue or painting)
______ Kneeler = boards attached to the back of the pews for kneeling
______ Lectern = place for song-leading and non-scriptural speaking
______ Nave = main portion of the church
______ Pews = long fixed benches with backs arranged in rows
______ Poor Box = a box for the collection of money as charity to the poor
______ Presider’s Chair = a seat for the presiding minister
______ Presence Lamp = light (usually candle) indicating the presence of the reserved Eucharist
______ Reconciliation Room = place for the Sacrament of Reconciliation
______ Reredos = carved, painted, or decorated structure forming the back of the Sanctuary
______ Sacrarium = sacristy sink with drain directly into earth for fitting disposals
______ Sacristy = room for sacred vessels and vestments
______ Sanctuary = the area comprising of the altar, ambo, and chair
______ Stations of the Cross = 14 crosses and/or images on wall recalling Christ’s passion
______ Tabernacle = secured box for reserved Eucharist
______ Vestry = room where clergy dons vestments and where robes are stored
