TOURING OUR CHURCH

Upon entering Saint Edward the Confessor’s Catholic Church we immediately are in a large open room, the narthex or {1}. On the left hand side of this room is a large reception table for the hospitality ministry. To the right of the wall cabinets is a diagram representing the ____________________. In the center of the room is a very large statue or {2} of ____________________. There are usually two flags in this area: ____________________ and ____________________. On the right side of this room is the entrance to a room that appears to be like a “mini-church.” This space is called the __________________________.

Straight ahead entering the {3} or main portion of the church, we can see a marble basin called the {4} with water flowing over its edge. We should use this water to bless ourselves when we enter or exit. [We are at the back of the church; looking forward is the front of the church and to your left is considered the left side of the church.]

At the front of the church, we see a raised platform or stage where the priest celebrates the Mass; that entire area is called the {5}. The background is a large semicircular marble {6} that has hanging on it a life-sized {7}. Underneath is a seat where the priest sits called the {8}. Next to these chairs are decorative wall coverings {9} representing the current liturgical season. The very large table in the middle is called the {10}. To its left where the Gospels are read is the {11}. A smaller version on the right where the cantor sings is a {12}. On the back wall to the left is a small table, called {13} holds the chalice, cups, and ciboria.

The number of the wooden carvings along the back walls is _______________________. These stories showing the story of the passion of Jesus are known as the {14}.

As we look towards the center of the church, the many long seats called {15} are provided for the congregation, the assembled people. At each seat is a small padded step near the ground called a {16} that people use during the Liturgy of the Eucharist.

Stained glass windows are frequently used to depict biblical stories. In the {17} or highest part of the church are six stained glass sections represent the story of ___________________________.

Each of the two side walls contains sixteen stained glass windows. The center six windows are seen as two sets of three. The left set depicts Jesus as a teacher; this Biblical story would be ____________________________. The right set depicts Christ as a miracle worker; this Biblical story would be _____________________________.

The outer ten narrow windows tell the story of our salvation history, our journey of faith. In order from left to right are:

1. _______________________________________

2. _______________________________________

3. _______________________________________

4. _______________________________________

5. _______________________________________

6. Pentecost

7. _______________________________________

8. St. Martin de Porres (represents ministry to poor and aged)

9. Blessed Theresa of Calcutta (represents our love of children)

10. _______________________________________

Chairs in the two rear alcoves give additional seating for Mass. Next to the left alcove is a {18} called the _________________________________ in our church, that allows for face-to-face or private confession. Behind this left rear alcove is a preparatory room called {19}. This room is also used as a {20} because the ministers dress here. To reverently handle the Precious Body and Blood of Christ the {21} is used to clean the sacred vessels.

Attached to the rear central pillar (behind the fountain) is a box {22} holding three jars of oil. To its left is an {2} which is part of a shrine to honor ____________________. Votive {23} are available to offer their intercessions at the feet of this first disciple.

Turning around is the entrance to a small dignified room called the _______________________________________. This room is exclusively for prayer and adoration. Inside is a large golden {24} along the back wall. The proper means of respect when approaching this box is called genuflecting. The special lighted candle near the box is called {25}.
